1511515 Kinky glass fibres OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 12 May 1975 [13 May 1974] 19932/75 Heading C1M Continuous glass fibres with lengthwise undulations are produced by drawing the glass from a stream feeder, attenuating the stream, directing a stream of fluid against the side of each fibre from a position spaced from the fibre path and in a region where the fibre is still soft, and cooling the fibres to make the resulting undulations permanent. The fluid (e.g. water, dilute acid or alkali, foam, carbonated water, CO 2 , N 2 , or air) is preferably directed near to the tip of the cone of the glass being drawn. The fibres may be vibrated (e.g. by rotating fluted or spirally grooved rollers, by out of phase rotating vanes or by a whirling air stream) at a position where they are substantially solid. The fibres may be drawn from two glasses with different coefficients of expansion whereby kinky fibre formation is enhanced. The stream feeder may be of a Pt-Rh alloy. |
