1428643 Preparation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol F HOFFMAN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 4 April 1974 [5 April 1973] 15006/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] 2,3,6-Trimethylphenol is produced by the gas phase reaction of m-cresol and methanol in the presence of a catalyst containing 24 p.b.w. magnesium as magnesium oxide, 2-15 p.b.w. of cerium as eerie oxide, 1-5 p.b.w. of zinc as zinc oxide and 0À1-1À5 p.b.w. of alkali metal, barium, calcium or strontium as the oxides. The reaction may be effected at 300-520‹ C., a pressure of atmospheric to 10 atm. excess and using a mole ratio of methanol to m-cresol of 2 : 1 to 20 : 1. The reaction product may in addition contain 2,3,4,6-tetramethylphenol, ocresol, 2,6-xylenol, phenol. 2,5-xylenol, 2,3- xylenol, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol and 2,3,5-trimethylphenol. The reaction mixture can be used without further purification for the manufacture of trimethylquinone.
