The variable resistance with an actuator (2) is for changing the value and a mechanism for shifting the wiper (7). Non-linear characteristics are obtained in that when the actuator is adjusted at a constant speed while the wiper is being shifted at a variable speed. A cone (3) with a knurled (4) outer surface is attached to the bottom end of the actuator spindle. This engages a second cone (6) mounted in the reverse manner to the first. The second cone drives the wiper contact which is on the under surface, making frictional contact with the surface of the resistance element which is enclosed in an insulated housing (1).
