A polymer of a monomer of formula:- where R1 is H or CH3 and R2 has formula -COOR3, where R3 is a 4-18C alkyl gp. or a copolymer of is not 25 (is not 50) wt.% I and a monomer of formula:- where R4 is H, CH3 or C2H5, R5 is a 1-3C alkyl gp. and R6 is H or CH3, is added to a hydrocarbon, in amt. of 0.03-2.4 (0.12-1.2), g/litre; the (co)polymer has intrinsic viscosity in a good solvent of is not 2 (2-10) dl/g at 25 degrees C. The (co)polymer reduces the press. loss due to friction when the hydrocarbon flows through a pipeline. The mixt. of hydrocarbon and (co)polymer is used as hydraulic fluid in recovering petroleum from boreholes. The additive has good stability to shearing and the drop in friction press. loss with time is less than with polyisobutene. The additive is less sensitive to the presence of water in the hydrocarbon than is polyisobutene.
