1433817 N - Heteroarylmethyl - benzomorphanes BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM GmbH 18 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 28869/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of the Formula (I) wherein R is H, CH 3 or CH 3 CO; R 1 and R 2 , which are in trans relationship, may be the same or different and each denotes C 1-3 alkyl; R 3 is H or CH 3 ; Y is -O- or -S-, and acid addition salts thereof, may be obtained by (a) reaction of a compound of the Formula II, with a compound of Formula III (wherein X represents an atom or group removable as an anion, e.g. a halogen atom, Alk-SO 2 -O, Ar-SO 2 -O, or trialkylammonium group), (b) reaction of a compound of Formula II with a compound of Formula IV (c) reaction of II with a compound of Formula V in the presence of catalytically activated hydrogen or formic acid, (d) reduction of a compound of the Formula VI (e) hydrolysis of a compound of Formula VII (wherein Sch denotes an alkyl, aralkyl or ester group), (f) methylation or acetylation of a compound of Formula I (wherein R denotes a hydrogen atom), (g) decarboxylation or reduction of a compound of Formula VIII (wherein Z represents a carboxyl, formyl or hydroxymethyl group or a halogen atom) reaction of a compound of Formula IX (wherein R 4 denotes a group removable under the conditions of a Hofmann elimination, A represents the anion of an acid and n represents the charge on the anion) with strong alkali, or (i) cyclizing a compound of the Formulae X or XI The processes may be carried out with racemic or optically active benzomorphanes, in order to give in the latter case optically active final products. Alternatively racemates may be resolved by known methods. The following intermediates are also described: 2 - (5 - carboxy - furfuryl) - 2<SP>1</SP> - hydroxy - 5,9# - dimethyl - 6,7 - benzomorphane and HCl salt and corresponding 2-(5-carbomethoxy - furfuryl) and 2 - (5 - formyl - furfuryl) compound; 1 - (2 - thienylmethyl) - 2 - (pmethoxybenzyl) - 3,4 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxypiperidine.HCl.
