Electron beam welding control - for noncircular seams by superimposed deviation of actual from desired value producting beam deflection

In the parent patent a laser, ion or electron beam is directed against a workpiece which is moved relative to the beam in accordance with a desired pattern. To compensate for any inertia in the workpiece motion control, the beam is deflected in accordance with the result of a comparison of a desired value with an actual value. In this addn. during a part of the operation, an intentional deviation of the actual from the desired value is generated, such that the resulting beam deflection to compensate the desired deviation produces an angle between the workpiece and the deflected beam. This removes the restriction of the applicability to circular seams and permits any desired contours to be fillet welded.
