1385632 Sealed cell casing P R MALLORY & CO Inc 8 Aug 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 37602/73 Heading H1B The seal between the cover 24 and case 12 of an organic electrolyte cell comprises a grommet 26 of C-shaped section of a plastics material which may cold-flow under pressure from the peened-over edge 26B. The material of grommet 26 must be compressible and inert to the electrolyte 18, a suitable material being polypropylene. To maintain the seal regardless of the cold-flow action, the grommet 26 encloses a ring 30 of elastomeric material, e.g. rubber, moulded to the cover 24, the resilience of the ring causing it to expand to maintain the seal. The material of the ring 30, which is corrodible by the electrolyte 18, is protected from the electrolyte by the grommet 26. The cell also includes cathode material 14, separator 16, and anode material 22 supported by the cover 24. |
