The shoes 29 are each formed at one end 30 of a double lever arm 31 pivoted at 33 to a side disc of the drum 1, the other end 32 forming a flyweight centrifugally displaced against a spring 34 to apply the brake 29 on overspeed of the drum. The shoe 29 engages a brake rim 35 formed on the appliance housing 7. The drum lock 27 comprises a brake shoe 2711 pivotally mounted on a spring biased lever 24 pivoted at 25 to the housing 7, to form a wedging attitude relative to the drum rim R, the wedging braking action being applied to the drum only in the winding in direction. This lock 27 is released by the depression of a button 18 which through a system of pivoted levers releases the shoe 2711 from the drum.
