The clockwork mechanism drives a governor and a gramophone disc spindle tilting in an elongated hole. The swing motion of the pick-up arm and needle is opposed by a spring bearing against a sound-transmitting diaphragm. At a particular stage the spindle is tilted to free the needle from the disc grooves, whereupon the arm returns to the starting position. The clockwork mechanism (24) drives the disc (4) via an intermediate wheel (26) fixed to the spindle (2)7 and other wheel s (18), and is stopped after the disc has been played. The governor has a rotary flywheel disc driven by the intermediate wheel, and whose position and direction of rotation in relation to the elongated hole and the spindle are such that tilting of the latter occurs as a result of the inertia force of the disc when the clockwork mechanism is stopped. Simultaneously the spindle and flywheel disc are uncoupled. The spindle tilts back into the working position when the clockwork mechanism is set going again after rewinding.
