4-Oxo-heptane-dicarboxylic acid (I) is prepd. by oxidising 3-(2-oxo-cyclohexyl)propionic acid (II) as soln. in an aliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a carboxylate of Mn, Cr, Fe and/or Co, at 80-135 degrees C, with O2-contg. gases. (I) is (a) an inter. for synthesis of gamma-alkyl- and gamma-arylaminoazelaic acids used in prepn. of dyes and plastics, (b) a precursor for azelaic acid, used in polymer prodn., (c) a synthesis component for prepn. of heterocycles. High selectivities of (I) can be achieved even with high conversions of (II). Process takes place with high conversions of (II). Process takes place without side-reactions and without further oxidn. to adipic acid. No pressures needed be applied.
