A pipe laying vessel has a navigation system which determines the distance of the vessel from transponders in known locations and computer from corrected distance signals the navigational coordinates defining the position of the vessel, the computed postion being plotted on a visual indicator bearing a line representing the desired path of the pipeline, so that the position of the vessel can be adjusted with preference ot the indicator to maintain the required course.
