(I) is claimed. (I) is prepd. by nitrating 8-hydroxyquinazoline with HNO3 to obtain 5,7-dinitro-8-hydroxyquinazoline which is then hydrogenated in the presence of a Pd catalyst at room temp. Cpd. (I), opt. in the form of a salt, is used as developer and/or coupler in hair dye compsns. based on oxidn. dyestuffs, opt. together with other couplers and/or developers.
