Induction heating coil for zone melting semiconductors - has recesses inside for spike to prevent latter causing short circuit

The inductive he ating coil, for melting given regions of a semiconductor bar (about 40mm dia.) without using a crucible, is constructed in two semi-circular halves which bolt around the semiconductor bar and melt a waist into it. In such a process 'spikes' (7) are often formed at the waisted region. These spikes can touch the induction coil and cause a short circuit which stops the process. The new arrangement prevents this short circuit by having a cut-out portion (5) in the inside circumference of the coil to allow the spike to form without danger of shorting.
