The specimen carrier for agglutination reactions consists of a glass plate which has a reflecting surface. The surface can have a deposited mirror backing or a polished metal foil so that the glass plate is in the form of a plane mirror. The other surface of the plate is roughened by sand blasting or chemical etching to produce an opaque field. The specimen holders are formed by a pattern of uniform circles cut into the opaque mask so that each one becomes a circular mirror. Because of the sharp contrast between the mask and reflecting surface, observation of the reactions is considerably enhanced. The differential surface tension provided by the smooth glass area and its surrounding mask ensures that specimen fluids remain in their individual compartments.
