Aliphatic aldehydes and corresp. alcohols and esters - made by aldol condensn. using phase transmission catalysts

Novel aldehydes of formula:- (in which x and y are 0-4; R is 1-4C alkyl) and the corresp. satd. aldehydes and alcohols, together with di-esters from the alcohols and carboxylic acids of formula:- HOOC-(CH2)z-COOH, (in which x is 1-4 and z is 1-12) are prepd. by aldol condensn. of aldehydes of formula:- (CH3(CH2)xCHRCHO with aldehydes of formula:- CH3(CH2)yCH2CHO, in presence of aq. alkali metal hydroxide soln. and a phase transmission catalyst. The esters are suitable bases for synthetic lubricating oils, e.g. for jet and piston engines. Use of catalysts results in much higher yields nd conversion of the raw materials.
