The sampler consists of a closed vessel with a fixed hollow vol. of revolution. The vessel is arranged vertically or inclined w.r.t. the generally closed space and has plane, parallel bases and a lateral surface sealed to the passage of powder particles. The vol. of revolution is provided with a rod fitted along the axis of revolution perpendicularly to the two bases and capable of rotating round its own axis in one direction or the other. The upper and lower bases of the appts. are each pierced by a sector-shaped window each of which can be completely inscribed in a sector, subtending an angle at the centre of 40 degrees-200 degrees. Rotary motion the rod drives two discs fixed to it and located within the closed vessel. The discs are closely adjacent to the upper base and lower bases respectively and each is pierced by a window of sector form subtending an angle at the centre of 40 degrees-200 degrees. The two windows are at least partly superimposed when the vessel is viewed along an axis perpendicular to its two bases. Pref. the windows on the upper and lower bases are sectors subtending an angle of ca 90 degrees . The appts. enables repeated small samples to be removed without disturbing the catalyst bed, for immediate analysis so as to check the state e.g. activity of the catalyst.
