<p>A mixer or homogeniser for viscous prods. incorporates a double-walled compartment, formed by two cylindrical vessels one inside the other, and having an inlet and an outlet. One of the walls is provided with projections. These projections are in parallel rows around the wall and slope in opposite senses in alternate rows. In addition, the projections are staggered in alternate rows. The two walls are in contact with means of heating or cooling. The mixer is a static one, the operation being carried out by the material being pumped through the double-walled chamber. Each projection divides the stream it receives into two streams, so that the circulation takes place in many streams which rejoin and divide again. The means of heating or cooling are fluids which circulate in jackets formed by supplementary walls outside and inside the double-walled compartment. The projections which divide the stream may be replaced by a separate grid inserted between the walls of the double-walled compartment. Partic. used for mixing plastics, glues, paints, thick oils, bitumens, tars and chocolate, and for treatment at high temps. e.g. 250-500 degrees C. The appts. resists high pressures. The movement through the mixing chamber can be quite slow, e.g. 0.1 m./min., good homogeneity being achieved by long residence time.</p> |
