Cooling arrangement for salient pole rotor windings - has heat pipes with evaporator ends embedded in coils and condenser ends in gas flow

The removal of waste heat from the windings of a salient pole rotor is assisted by embedding heat pipes (16) in the coils. These pipes are placed such that the evaporator ends are inside the mass of the coil whilst the condenser ends are located in the cooling gas flow. Typically a line of heat pipes (16) is placed at a point roughly half way through the coil thickness of a multilayer winding. The condenser ends project through the bottom of the coil into the gas duct (14) between adjacent poles. Alternatively the heat pipes may lie axially in the windings with their condenser ends projecting into the gas space at the machine ends just outside the coil noses.
