When forming a honeycomb structure by extrusion of a mixt. of water, particles and a methyl cellulose extrusion aid through a slotted die having a cross-section reducing mask on its outer face, the temp. of the material is 2-25 pref. 5-15 degrees F above the gel point and the temp. of the extrusion barrel is 0-15,. pref. 5-12 degrees F below the gel point. The particles are pref. refractory metal oxides such as silica, alumina, alumina and magnesium oxide, and the methyl cellulose is present in an amt. of 1-7 wt. % of the oxides. Maintenance of the temps. between the specified limits ensures that a skin of even thickness, firmly adhered to the body of the honeycomb, is formed.
|
