Catalytic reactions in the gas phase use a particulate catalyst suspended as a fluidised bed in the gas streams. Catalyst and feed are introduced into the vessel at such a rate as to form a stable fluidised bed. Above the vessel on the outlet is a gas cooler of shell and tube construction. Above the cooler and projecting from it are one or more gas lines feeding cyclone separator systems mounted around the cooler. These serve to remove entrained catalyst particles and dust, this collects at the base of the cyclone. A line from each cyclone runs down to the base of the bed to recycle the catalyst. The clean gas is collected and fed off. System is for use esp. with exothermic catalytic reactions e.g. oxidation processes for conversion of hydrocarbons. esp. conversion of naphthalene to phthallic anhydride The system described is of simple construction low installation and operating costs, avoids the dange of fire or explosion in the event of afterburning and provides virtually complete dust removal. Better thermal economy is obtd.
