Pharmaceutical, food or cosmetic compsns., taken by mouth which affect skin colouration contain a carotene or a xanthophyll (I) together with a compatible vehicle, so that the unit dosage of (I) is 20-70 mg. Compsns. give a tanned appearance to the skin without exposure to sunlight. A typical composition contained 50mg canthaxanthine in capsule form. Three capsules are given per day to adults.
