The gobs or drops are fed into a vibrating bath of liq., where the combined effects of quenching and vibration burst the gobs to produce the fragments. Vibration is pref. also employed to convey the glass fragments out of the bath, and the pref. device consists of a chassis fitted with skids and spring mountings for a trough which can be inclined at an adjustable angle. The trough is fitted with a vibrator, a drain plug, and overflow plugs used to vary the height of the quenching liq. Appts may also be used for circulating the liq. For example, gobs are drawn from the row of melting furnaces to mfr. bottles etc., but if a breakdown occurs in a blowing or moulding machine, the glass would solidify in the furnace outlet if the glass flow were stopped. The gobs are therefore fed into a trough. The fragments obtd. are small enough so they can be directly remelted without the cost of crushing operations.
|
