A tunnelling machine has a cylindrical cutter inside which are mounted two arms (14) which can be swung up or down at an angle to the centre line of the tunnel being cut. These are positioned one each side of a conveyor (12) for the cut material, and each arms carries a segment shaped bucket (15A, B) to feed the cut material onto the conveyor. Each bucket can be swung independently about a pivot spindle (16) at right angle to the direction of travel of the conveyor, and both buckets are positioned ahead of the conveyor. Each bucket is swung by its own hydraulic cylinder (17), so that they can be alternately or simultaneously swung towards the conveyor. Each bucket is carried by a carriage (14) mounted on the side supports (15) of the conveyor.
