<p>The heart rate and rhythm meter has four electrodes fitted to the patient being monitored. Two are injection electrodes applying a high frequency current. The other two are scanning electrodes between the first pair, coupled to a detector, filter and shaping channel for the rheographic signal. This channel is coupled to a heart rate counter. A channel is provided to eliminate variations in the lung impedance. It is coupled to the inection electrodes and supplies a rheographic lung signal. The detector filter and shaping channel has a recombination stage in which the rheographic lung signal is subtracted from the rheographic signal. The meter is used for monitoring pacemaker patients. The system is absolutely safe as it relies on mechanical contractions of the heart muscle rather than generated electrical signals.</p> |
