Appts. for washing stack gases comprises a horizontal duct having: an inlet for stack gases in its bottom wall adjacent one end; a washed gas outlet at the other end in its upper wallf a blower located at the gas inlet end and arranged to blow air through the duct across the stack gas inlet towards the outlet end; a spent liq. outlet in the bottom wall; baffle plates arranged downstream of the gas inlet to cause the gases to follow a tortuous path; liq. spray units arranged between the baffles; and ballfe mountings whereby some of the baffles can be adjusted about an axis at right angles to the lengths of the duct and whereby some can be adjusted about a universal axis such that the tortuous path can be varied. The flow of gases from the stack can be controlled by the blower whilst the tortuous path ensures good gas liq. contact and its variability improves handling.
