The tape drive provides two speeds for the tape. One of the speeds is for recording or reproduction, and the other speed is for fast drive. There is a coupling between the drive and the cassette, and a bracket carrying a pressure roller to apply the tape against the magnetic head. The recorder has a push button mechanism to move the bracket from an operating to a retracted position, and to simultaneously actuate the fast drive when the button (6) is in one position (F). The button (6) also has a retracted position (R) for stopping the tape or for recording or reproduction. In another position (S) the button (6) has a position corresponding to switching off of the recorder, and in a fourth position (E) corresponding to ejection of the cassette and locking of the bracket. The intermediate positions (F, S) of the button are stable and avoid false control of the recorder.
