Vinylbenzyl derivatives are obtained by reaction of vinylbenzyl halides with alkali metal cyanates, in the presence of a polymerisation inhibitor, in a polar solvent containing a nitrogen atom or a sulphur atom but free of active hydrogen atoms in the molecule, in the presence or in the absence of a compound containing an active hydrogen, and at a temperature between 25 and 200 DEG C. Tris(vinylbenzyl) isocyanurate is obtained by such a reaction, in the absence of a compound containing an active hydrogen, whereas di(vinylbenzyl)urea is obtained by the reaction in the presence of water, and an N'-substituted vinylbenzylurea is obtained by the reaction in the presence of an amine.
