1359990 Analogue/digital converter MARCONI CO Ltd 26 Oct 1971 [19 Dec 1970] 60407/70 Heading G4H In an analogue/digital converter of the type in which a counter is incremented by pulses from an oscillator until the potential on a capacitor charged by a current derived from constant current generator means is equal to the amplitude of the unknown analogue voltage, the charging current is controlled by the instantaneous count in the counter. In the embodiment described (Fig. 1) the unknown analogue signal is sampled and stored on capacitor C2 by operation of switch. Counter 2 controls via NAND gates 53, 54, 45, 57 constant current generators 59-61 providing currents of values 3R/128, 12R/128, 48R/128. A fourth generator providing current of value I/128 is permanently on. Initially the counter receives pulses via a gate 11 until the third most significant bit is "1" when a switch 52 is operated to pass the counter via a divider 51 (dividing by 2). When the second most significant bit is "1" the gate 54 is enabled to turn on generator 59 and simultaneously the divider 51 is switched out until the third most significant bit again becomes "1". Similarly when the most significant bit is "1" generator 60 is turned on and the divider is switched out of circuit. When both the first and second most significant bits are "1" the third generator 61 is enabled. After each measurement the capacitor C1 is discharged via switch 7 and the counter is reset. The apparatus may be used for p.c.m. coding of speech signals. |
