<p>1440536 Polyphosphonate flame retardants AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 6 June 1974 [28 June 1973 (2)] 25289/74 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C2] A flame retardant composition comprises a compound of Formula A where R and R<SP>1</SP> are methyl, ethyl or methoxy or, when AR is a benzene radical, R and R<SP>1</SP> together form a saturated 6-membered hydrocarbon ring in conjunction with 2 adjacent C atoms of the benzene ring and where (a) AR is a benzene radical, n and m are 0, 1 or 2 and x is 2 to 6, (b) AR is a naphthalene radical, n and m are 0, 1, 2 or 3 and x is 2, 3 or 4 or (c) AR is an anthracene radical, n and m are 0 to 4 and x is 2 to 6 together with ammonium polyphosphate and, optionally, a metal oxide or carbonate. In examples, materials flame retarded are polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate and poly- (1,4 - cyclohexane - dimethylene) terephthalate.
