A fluid flow metering device includes a restriction (21A) in the cross sectional area of that region of conduit in which measurement of the flow takes place. Within this restriction is mounted an impeller device (16) and (17) which generates a vortex in the flowing fluid. The generated vortex has a varying frequency which is directly correlatable to the fluid flow rate. A signal processing unit (15) is employed to monitor the fluid vortex frequency and convert this into an indication of flow rate.
