Use of a gas mixture containing 35 to 80% by volume of nitrogen, 15 to 50% by volume of neon and 5 to 19% by volume of helium as a plasma-cutting gas for making burr-free severing cuts in the plasma-cutting of low-alloyed low-carbon steels, in particular structural steel. The gas mixture which preferably contains 1 to 5% by volume of hydrogen and, if appropriate, small quantities of argon, oxygen and carbon dioxide, allows the use of nitrogen/neon/helium mixtures which arise in air separation and have hitherto found only limited use. In addition, a reduction in the power consumption is obtained by lowering the working voltage.
