DETERMINING INITIAL BIT RATE FOR ADAPTIVE BIT RATE VIDEO PLAYBACK

Enhancements to adaptive bit rate techniques are described that relate to selection of the initial bit rate with which video content is delivered. The bandwidth available to a client device is estimated by determining the time required by the client device to download a specific amount of content, e.g., the "above-the-fold" portion of a requested web page. An initial bit rate is selected for video content associated with 10 the page that is within the estimated available bandwidth.
