Paint is applied to surfaces under water, such as hulls of ships or underwater structures, by a device which distributes the paint over a certain area as it is moved along over it at a certain pressure. During the forward motion the water is displaced from the surface and is replaced by paint supplied through a hose from a container above water level. Smooth and adhesive coating may be applied even to irregular surfaces. The thickness of the coating can be readily adjusted and water can neither interfere with the paint nor with the smoothing rolls which spread out the paint evenly.
