Setting accelerator comprises a major proportion of alkali metal nitrate and a minor proportion of a water soluble condensate of sulfonated aromatic hydrocarbon/aliphatic aldehyde or an alkali metal salt of the condensate. The proportions are such as a impart a synergistic set acceleration to cement. The accelerator produces higher early compressive strength in the cement inhibits corrosion of reinforcing metals, water requirements are reduced, workability and finishing appearance are improved and the products are not discoloured. Accelerator containing 1 part LOMARD to 8 parts NaNO2 is used. 1.897 lbs. is used per 94 lbs. of cement to effect optimum set acceleration and hardening.
