Sulphur dioxide, which is contained in the exhaust air of a container washing plant, generally having a sterilisation stage, is removed by scrubbing the exhaust air using a scrubbing liquid, for example water or alkali solution, in a scrubbing tower, by first passing the exhaust air through a scrubbing liquid bath (8) and then forcing it into the scrubbing tower (9) and treating the exhaust air in a counter-current process with the scrubbing liquid. The apparatus for this has a scrubbing vessel (1) and a scrubbing tower (9) having a plurality of screens (10, 11) arranged one above the other; the feed (12) for scrubbing liquid is above the topmost screen. This enables an improvement or simplification of the sulphur dioxide removal in the operation of the said plants. <IMAGE>
