<p>Sepn. of isotopes comprises circulating a gaseous isotopic mixt. flowing at a high velocity in contact with a rotating cylinder placed across the flow. A mixt. enriched in heavier isotope and a mixt. enriched in lighter isotope are recovered respectively in the zone where the static pressure is lower and in the zone where the static pressure is higher, because of the rotation of the cylinder. The isotope mixt. is pref. made to flow between two cylinders rotating in inverse directions. Overcomes the principal obstacle to the development of efficient ultracentrifugation units, i.e. the difficulty of developing a material having the chemical characteristics suitable for prolonged contact with gaseous isotopic mixt. such as UF6 and the mechanical characteristics giving resistance to the very large stresses resulting from the centrifugal force produced by a radial acceleration several hundred thousand times the gravitational acceleration, for standard bowl centrifuges. In addn., the acceleration field which brings about the sepn. can be increased by a factor of ten, cf. ultracentrifugation.</p> |
