Gripper thread bobbin drive for winding a thread lap on the bobbin has a friction wheel driven shaft supporting a cap the upper part of the cap being provided with a pair of diametrally opposite slits through which project the shanks of a spring, the free ends of the shanks being trapped in axial grooves cut in the inner wall of the lower part of the cap. Pref. the cap is supported on teh shaft by a pin and the upper parts is a cylindrical section which receives the bobbin provided with one or two axially extending grooves in which are located the shanks of the U-shaped leaf spring to engage the bobbin.
