1531994 Clamps DONALDSON CO INC 24 Oct 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 43728/75 Heading E2B [Also in Division F2] A band 21 of ductile metal, e.g. "dead soft" tempered stainless steel, for joining overlapping tubes 35, 36 e.g. of an exhaust system, has a length slightly less than the circumferences of the tubes so that on being clamped around their junction it is stretched beyond its elastic limit and conforms to the tube contours to seal them. The ends 24 of the band 21 are bent to provide clamping flanges that are reinforced by spot- or seam-welded bars 26. The ends 24 of the band may be doubled back or completely wrapped around the bars 26 before welding. Two bolts or a single U-bolt 32 passing through bores 31 in the end flanges 21, 26 provide the clamping means for improved clamping. Sleeves may be secured to the reinforcing bar 26 against which the nuts 34 bear, the bores 31 in the sleeves and bar being only just large enough for the bolt or bolts to pass. The bends 30 at the ends 24 may be perpendicular to the band edges 22, 23 or for improved contact with tubes of different diameters may be slightly inclined. For the same reason the bars 26 may have slots between the bores 31 to enable them to deform in zig-zag fashion, or else they may have a slight V- shape on the sides that face the tubes 35, 36. A compressible packing strip 37 is positioned between the ends 21 as a further seal. |
