The battery cage has a barred door (2) which permits a hen to put its head through to rach the feeder (3). The door has a lower catch (6) which engages the feeder and keeps the door closed. The catch (6) can be overcome by the hen and to this is supplemented with a locking bar having eyelets (4) so that it can slide on the end bars of the door. The locking bar has a hook which engages in the feeder thus firmly securing the door, but which can be readily released when tending the hen.
