A computer-implemented method for managing file synchronization between a first filesystem of a first electronic device and a second filesystem of a second electronic device, the first electronic device being in communication with the second electronic device via a communications network, the method comprising:
identifying files to be synchronized between the first filesystem and the second filesystem; and generating a unified index that includes, in respect of each one of the files, an indication of each of a first state associated with the first filesystem, a second state associated with the second filesystem, and a third state being a synchronized state, the file synchronization between the first filesystem and the second filesystem being executed without maintaining individual indexes for each of the first and second filesystems.
