Apparatus for applying a strip of a patterned spread of adhesive transversely across a continuous web, comprises an engraved roll mounted for rotation in a pan containing a supply of adhesive and an impression cylinder about which the continuous web is guided. A compressible blanket strip is removably secured to the peripheral surface of the impression cylinder and is of some desired configuration and size so as to cause a corresponding adhesive configuration and size to be successively impressed upon the web as the blanket moves the web into contact with the adhesively wetted engraved roll.
