N-acetyl taurine (I) is prepared by the acetylation of taurine using acetic anhydride in pure acetic acid, in the absence of water and alcohol. The stable form of (I), m.pt. 140 degrees C, which then re-solidifies and melts again at 191-192 degrees C is also claimed, as are salts of (I) with arginine, lysine and ornithine. (I) crosses the haemato-meningeal barrier more readily than taurine, and thus plays an important physiological role. Previous attempts to prepare (I) have given a product which decomposes in air. (I) prepared by this new method is stable.
|
