The gas-filled interior of a suspension insulator (200) is outwardly sealed for transportation until it is assembled with the circuit breaker housing (228) in that a ring seal (220) engages with the section (202) of the actuation rod which passes through the suspension insulator (200). The end region of the section is designed as a valve gate (204) which, as a hollow body, has a dividing wall (208). In order to seal, the valve gate assumes an intermediate position (Fig. 5a) between the activation and deactivation positions, in which the dividing wall (208) is positioned in the vicinity of the ring seal (220). In both the activation and deactivation positions (Fig. 5c or 5b), two flow paths (226, 236; 242, 244) are formed by the valve gate to allow the gas to circulate from the suspension insulator (200) into the circuit breaker housing (228) and back. The ring seal (220) can be hydraulically actuated by a piston screw (224) so that it engages in the transportation position only (Fig. 5a). <IMAGE>
