New quat. ammonium chloriodides are of formulae (Ia) and (Ib). In the formulae, R1-R3 are 1-18C alkyl, aralkyl, alkyl-aralkyl, cycloalkyl or alkylcycloalkylalkyl, or may be linked so as to form a satd. heterocyclic or heteroaromatic ring; R4 is 10-18C alkyl, benzyl, 2-benzyloxyethyl, the gp. CH3-circle with diagonal line-CH-CH11H23 (circle with diagonal line is p-phenylene; 11 is mean value), C12H25-NH-CO-CH2-, or (where R1 is H or CH3); and n = 2-12; provided that when R4 is benzyl, then R1-R3 are other than 10-18C alkyl. (Ia,b) are antiseptics with lower long- and short-term toxicity than corresponding chlorides, bromides and sulphonates. Thus, cetylpyridinium chloroiodide has an MIC of 75 mu g./ml. against Staph. aureus ATCC 6538-DR and has a mouse LD50 of 421 mg./kg. p.o. Corresp. figures for cetylpyridinium chloride are 20 mu g./ml. and 196 mg./kg.
