PURPOSE:A sintered rod of oxide soot from phosphate glass is molten by heating successively with a laser as a heat source and made into glass whereby the melting operation can be efficiently performed without adsorption of moisture in the air to produce title glass. CONSTITUTION:For example, the oxide soot of phosphate glass 21 is sintered into a rod and placed on supporter 11. This is put in quartz pipe 22 that is filled with helium gas and set on a device that has mechanisms for rotating and lowering supporter 11. Then the laser beam from laser generator 23 is irradiated through a hole F on the wall of quartz pipe 22 and the oxide soot is in order molten by heating from one end to form glass. EFFECT:The resulting glass material includes less voids. |
