<p>New peg for introduction into borings in bones is ca 12-20 cm in length and ca 3-5 mm in diameter and consists of (a) physiologically innocuous plastics (I) capable of giving prolonged release of an antibacterial active substance and (b) at least on antibacterial active substance. (I) is pref. based on polyurethane, ethylene vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile fibre, silicone rubber, polylactide, polymethacrylate and/or polyacrylate. The peg is pref. physically stabilized by means of a solid surgical wire along its long axis. Pegs are for use wherever surgical nails would be used, e.g. for immobilising an arthritic joint or a fractured bone. They have the advantage of activity combatting infection (esp. osteomyelitis) in the borings in the bone.</p> |
