The present invention concerns a winch comprising a drum rotating about its lengthwise axle, on which a line can run up with a certain number of turns and run out from the last turn in order to draw in the line by rotation of the drum. The purpose of the present invention is to enable an increased rotational speed of the winch drum, especially under low load. Normally, the winch drum is rotated by means of winch handle and the ability of a human being to turn a handle manually is greatly limited in regard to speed. Furthermore, for winches used aboard boats, the handle is easily lost when loosened from the winch and falling overboard, and the invention eliminates the need for a handle.
