Handling water-cooled reactor fuel elements in two-tier pool - with safety trolley below upper rack units during handling

A store, esp. a storage pool, for rod-shaped fuel elements esp. from light water reactors, contains two layers of storage racks for the elements. A travelling trolley in the store has a plan area at least equal to that of a rack unit used in the upper layer of storage racks. This travelling trolley accompanies the movement of a rack in the upper unit when the rack is being positioned. The trolley may itself constitute the handling device for a rack unit of the upper layer or may merely follow beneath it while the rack unit is handled by an over head crane. The possibility of a rack unit contg. fuel elements falling through the dpeth of the lower layer to the bottom of the pool if the crane should fail is eliminated.
