In a diesel exhaust system including a filter to remove particulates from the exhaust gases, the particulates are periodically removed from the filter by burning them off, the system including actuating and control means (30, 32, 36, 38, 40) by which the engine throttle is periodically operated to restrict air flow and thus increase the exhaust gas temperature sufficiently to burn off the particulates. |
