The system prevents customer fraud and price reading errors by the cashier. The price is denoted by a specific annotation printed directly onto the packaging of each article, so that it cannot be altered subsequently. Pref the price code is read by a character reader and transmitted to a transcoder which supplies the corresponding price, the re-pricing of goods effected by changing the price associated with each code, without the code itself having to be modified.
